A film biography of a movie director usually includes conventional genre trappings, like clips of great scenes and memories of old colleagues, as indeed this film does. Mainly, this is an engrossing tour through the George Stevens career that provides a greater understanding of his background, talent, creative preoccupations, and especially the experiences in World War II that irrevocably changed his approach to film making. As head of the Special Coverage unit documenting the war on film, Stevens took the only known color footage of the ground war in Europe, including the liberation of Paris and the horrors of Dachau. If his movies hold a mirror up to America, it is because his personal principles paralleled the highest aspirations of this country. In his films, Stevens offered as much insight on American life and character as he could muster.
